Summer is often a season we look forward to all year long. Longer days, vacations, backyard barbecues, and time with family and friends give us plenty of reasons to celebrate.

But for many professionals, summer can also become unexpectedly full. Before you know it, your calendar is packed, your weekends are booked, and what was meant to be a season of relaxation can quickly become another source of stress.

In my recent segment on CBS Chicago Mental Health Minute, I shared a simple reminder for protecting your well-being during the summer months:

Think of your boundaries as your mental health SPF.

Just as sunscreen protects your skin from the sun, healthy boundaries protect your peace from the stress and burnout that can come from overcommitting yourself.

Protect Your Time and Energy

One of the simplest ways to practice healthy boundaries is to pause before adding something new to your calendar.
I encourage you to ask yourself:

“Is this something that energizes me, or is this something that depletes me?”

This simple question can help you become more intentional about how you spend your time and energy.

Not every invitation needs an immediate yes. Some activities bring joy, connection, and renewed energy, while others may leave you feeling overwhelmed or stretched too thin.

Being mindful about your commitments does not mean missing out on the things you enjoy. It means creating space for the experiences that truly matter to you.

Prioritize the People Who Fill Your Cup

The relationships we nurture have a powerful impact on our mental and emotional health.

Spending time with people who encourage us, support us, and bring positive energy into our lives can help build resilience and reduce stress.

Summer is a wonderful opportunity to create memories, but we do not have to say yes to every invitation or fill every available moment. Sometimes the most meaningful moments come from slowing down and spending quality time with the people who matter most.

Focus on quality over quantity and prioritize the relationships that leave you feeling supported and energized.

Make Room for Rest and Recovery

One of the most important boundaries we can create is protecting time to recharge.

Many of us carefully schedule work meetings, appointments, and social events but forget to intentionally schedule downtime.

Rest is not something we earn after we accomplish everything on our to-do list. It is an essential part of maintaining our mental and physical well-being.

Rest looks different for everyone. It might be a quiet afternoon by the pool, a walk outside, time spent at home, or simply leaving space in your schedule with no plans.

These moments allow us to reset so we can return to our responsibilities with greater focus, patience, and energy.

Protect Your Peace

Healthy boundaries are not about saying no to the people and experiences we love. They are about creating a healthier relationship with our time and energy.

When we protect our peace, we give ourselves the opportunity to be fully present and enjoy the moments that matter most.

This summer, remember that your boundaries are your mental health SPF. Protect your peace with the same commitment you give to protecting your skin.

By prioritizing what energizes you, spending time with people who fill your cup, and making room to recharge, you can create a summer that supports your well-being.
